As someone new to politics, I feel that the Commission is the place where I can have a real impact on the issues that affect our day-to-day lives in a truly positive and productive way.
I am running for a seat on the City Commission to improve transparency and accountability in City of Fargo operations. I believe it is time for Fargo to transition to a ward system for more accurate and direct representation, restructure specials to remove undue burdens from residents, and reexamine the way we incentivize businesses.
My goal is to be an honest, straightforward, and committed advocate for the people who call Fargo their home.
Derik Arneson
I am a lifelong Fargo resident and graduate of Fargo North, having grown up in the Longfellow neighborhood and now having lived in Hawthorne for the past 25 plus years. I am an IT professional with Network Center, Inc. where I focus on finding the best solution for each customer at a value that works for them, with an emphasis on building lasting relationships through trust, responsibility, and reliability.
I have a passion for historic homes, gardens, and growing fruit and vegetables. To me, these represent a reprieve from our highly tech-infused lives. I appreciate the craftsmanship and enduring functionality of old homes, and I love not only the satisfaction of growing my own food but also sharing its bounty with friends and family.
I want to explore moving to a city-wide infrastructure tax for things like road, water and sewer, reducing the impact of major infrastructure project on Fargo residents. I think we can focus specials to truly local improvements like walkways, parks and neighborhood beautification.
I want to see Fargo move to a ward system with a City Council with council members representing their neighborhoods rather than commissioners representing the entire city. This would allow for more direct representation and might have the added benefit of reducing barriers to public service.
The City Commission is about managing the city, setting smart financial goals and improving the lives of the people of Fargo. The Commission should be focused on how to best manage growth without disproportionally impacting our residents and neighbors.
